For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk or water

Instructions

For the Dough:

  1. 1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle in yeast and let sit for about five minutes until frothy.
  2. 2. Add melted butter, eggs, salt, and ground cardamom to the yeast mixture. Stir in half of the flour until combined.
  3. 3. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms that pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. 4. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for about ten minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about one hour or until doubled in size.

For Shaping:

  1. 6. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle about half an inch thick. Spread melted butter over it, sprinkle with sugar mixed with additional ground cardamom, then roll tightly from one long side.
  2. 7. Cut into individual pieces (about two inches long) and place cut-side-up on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Let rise again while preheating oven to 375°F (190°C).

For Baking:

  1. 8. Bake for about twenty minutes until golden brown.
  2. 9. For the glaze, mix powdered sugar with milk or water until desired consistency is achieved and drizzle over warm buns.
